Henry Mill, a waterworks engineer, received British patent (No. 395) for an apparatus referred to as a “Machine for Transcribing Letters”. It has been estimated that over a series of decades that the typewriter went through over 50 incremental design changes until a commercially successful version was invented. Early typewriting machines were actually designed to enable the blind to write.
